ALICE IN CHAINS' JERRY CANTRELL Is Surprised NIRVANA Was Inducted Into ROCK HALL Before PEARL JAM
May 15, 2014ALICE IN CHAINS' Jerry Cantrell spoke to Cleveland.com about NIRVANA's recent induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, making them the first "grunge band" from the Seattle scene to be inducted. "It's well deserved," said Cantrell. "I loved those guys." But the singer-guitarist added, "I was surprised to see them go in before PEARL JAM. They went in for 'Bleach', which wasn't a big record 'till 'Nevermind' became a big record."
Cantrell admitted it would be nice to ALICE IN CHAINS be inducted, but, "If even one of our group [of Seattle bands] was considered and inducted, it says a lot for them and, associatively, about our whole city."
Cantrell was coming up on the Seattle music scene at the same time as NIRVANA and ran into Kurt Cobain occasionally. "I didn't really know Kurt that well, but there was a guy I always admired," Jerry told The Pulse Of Radio. "We didn't spent much time together, but the few times we did spend together, you know, were times I'll always remember. You know, he was a really sweet guy, and a really genuine soul, you know, and an incredibly talented artist."
Cantrell was asked in a 2013 interview with Radio.com about the chances of his band getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. ALICE IN CHAINS' debut album, "Facelift", came out in 1990, which would make the group eligible in 2015. Cantrell, who performed at last year's ceremony with inductees HEART, said about the possibility, "We're not in this to win awards. And that's the attitude I went there with. And I have to say, in fairness, that my opinion was a bit changed by being a guest with HEART and seeing how much it meant for them. It was a cool show, it was with a lot of respect. I was kind of moved."
Cantrell added, "I also liked what [RUSH drummer and Hall Of Fame inductee] Neil Peart said: 'For years, we've been saying that this isn't a big deal. Turns out: it's a pretty big deal!' It was cool to see him say that."
ALICE IN CHAINS' fellow Seattle groups, SOUNDGARDEN and PEARL JAM, are also at or close to eligibility. SOUNDGARDEN is eligible now, while PEARL JAM will celebrate 25 years since the release of "Ten" in 2016.
